Some will, for a while. A toy earns its place here by surviving contact with an actual animal — rubber that takes a proper chew rather than splitting on the second go, rope that frays slowly instead of shedding threads across the rug, and puzzles that stay interesting after the treat has gone.

Both, but not interchangeably. Dogs want something to work at — a ring to fetch, a ball that makes a noise worth chasing, rope to pull against.
